Lady Audley's Secret

I just finished Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Fun!

third edition of Lady Audley's Secret

It was first published serially in 1861 and 1862 and then published as a novel in three volumes in 1862. It was a huge success.

It's an example of a sensation novel, which was an entire genre in the latter half of the 19th century. I don't think I'd ever heard the term before, though I have read The Woman in White (1860) by Wilkie Collins, which is perhaps the first sensation novel.

There was an adaptation of it on MYSTERY! back in 2000. I'll have to watch for it on PBS or look for the DVD.

Update (2025-03-26): I just came across it on youtube. I don't know why the description there says 1999, Helena Bonham Carter, and classsic movie. It's from 2000, stars Neve McIntosh, and was on television. In any case, I enjoyed it.
