Pride and Prejudice 1967
I just finished watching the 1967 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. This was in six parts and is the earliest BBC adaptation that survives.
It was mostly enjoyable, but they made several odd changes.
-
They removed Mary Bennet entirely! That's right, there are only four Bennet sisters. Unacceptable! It didn't seem to really simplify anything or save them any time, so it's not clear why they did it.
-
Darcy's letter is not a letter, but an in-person conversation. And it just doesn't work. I can see how this is a tempting idea to avoid having to do a voice-over or some other letter-reading device, but they must have seen that it wasn't working.

Georgiana is Georgina for some reason.
Polly Adams plays Jane Bennet. She is the mother of Susannah Harker, who plays Jane Bennet in P&P 1995.
